I felt totally lost.

It was my first time going to the gym, and I was surrounded by a bunch of big, burly men who were exercise pros.

I didn’t know how to work the machines, but was too intimidated to ask for help. And I didn’t want to go over to the free weights where I’d awkwardly have to search for something I could lift.

I felt completely out of place.

As a dancer and Varsity Kickline athlete, my active lifestyle had made it easy to stay fit. But after high school when I wasn’t moving as much, my body changed. My identity had centered around being someone who didn’t have to try, who was “naturally skinny”. Someone who could eat what she wanted and not gain weight.

Who was I now if I wasn’t that person?

I stopped eating enough and started compulsively exercising, following random advice, trying to get back to my high school weight because I thought being skinny meant you were healthy.

I had no idea what I was doing.

For years I struggled with disordered eating, living in fear of what might happen if I skipped a workout. I obsessed over my body image. It finally got to a point where I couldn’t deny that I was harming myself.

Something needed to change if I wanted to feel good again.

I decided to study human movement science and nutrition, learning how to eat and move in a way that was right for me.

I redefined my relationship with food and exercise.

Instead of being afraid of food and obsessing over everything I eat, I now understand it’s what fuels me. And exercise is no longer something I have to do or should be doing.

It's something I love to do because it shows me what I’m capable of, and I get stronger and more confident each day!
